乔治·威廉·贝利于1944年8月27日出生于德克萨斯州亚瑟港。贝利在博蒙特的拉马尔大学开始上大学，最终转学到拉伯克的德克萨斯理工大学;但他没有完成学业。他在 1960 年代中期在当地剧院公司工作，直到 1970 年代移居加利福尼亚。在这里，他开始制作电视连续剧，如《星空与哈奇》（1975）、《查理的天使》（1976）和《CHiP》（1977）。他最终在查克·诺里斯（Chuck Norris）的电影《一个人的力量》（1979）中获得了电影处女作，然后在MASH（1972-1983）中扮演了路德·里佐（Luther Rizzo）的角色。1993年，他回到德克萨斯州，再次在西南德克萨斯州立大学学习。1994年，他毕业于美术剧院专业，获得学士学位;在1999-2000学年，他是驻校艺术家。
