経歴
名優ウォルター・ヒューストンの息子として生まれる。ボクサー、作家、スポーツ記者、俳優といった仕事を経て脚本家に。「ヨーク軍曹」などの脚本を手がけた後、41年に「マルタの鷹」で監督デビュー。「黄金」でアカデミー監督賞と脚本賞を受賞。その後も様々なジャンルの作品を送り出す。俳優としても活躍し、「チャイナタウン」などの出演作がある。遺作は、娘のアンジェリカが主演を、息子のトニーが脚本を務めた「ザ・デッド“ダブリン市民”より」。87年8月28日に死去。
