Born in Brooklyn, New York, he started his career in show business in 1938 working as an usher at Loew's Pitkin Theater. He has also directed TV movies (including the original Cagney and Lacey movie-of-the-week, and also feature films, including Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Go Tell the Spartans, and two Clint Eastwood films Hang 'Em High and Magnum Force.
