Életrajz
Filmes karrierjét 1969-ben Brian De Palma "The Wedding Party" című alkotásában kezdte. 1973-ra már kétszer elnyerte a New York-i Filmkritikusok díját a legjobb mellékszereplő kategóriában a "Bang the Drum Slowly" és Martin Scorsese rendezésében bemutatott Aljas utcák (Mean Streets) című filmekben nyújtott alakításáért. A fiatal maffiózó, Vito Corleone ábrázolásáért a Francis Ford Coppola rendezte Keresztapa 2. (The Godfather Part II) című filmben az Akadémia a legjobb mellékszereplőnek járó szobrocskával tüntette ki, 1974-ben. Második Oscarját 1980-ban, a szintén Scorsese rendezte Dühöngő bika (Raging Bull) című filmben nyújtott alakításáért kapta.
De Nirót következő munkáiért jelölték további Oscar-díjra: Taxisofőr, A rettegés foka (Cape Fear), A szarvasvadász (The Deer Hunter), Ébredések (Awekenings).
1988-ban Jane Rosenthallal együtt Tribeca Productions néven saját vállalatot hozott létre, mely számos film elkészítését tette már lehetővé, melyekben De Niro producerként, rendezőként és színészként is közreműködött. Néhány Tribeca-produkció, De Niro szereplésével: Viharszív (Thunderheart), A mecénás szeretője (Mistress), A hűtlenség ára (Faithful).
