Daniel has reluctantly followed his father into the priesthood. After graduating, he comes to a parish in Hälsingland. During one stormy night, Daniel and Karin, a resident of Hälsingland and old friend, are both overcome with emotion and sleep together. Filled with regret over breaking his vows, he runs out into the dark night and is struck by lightning. He loses his memory and is taken to a distant hospital to recover.
