Biografie

Paul Joseph Schrader ist ein US-amerikanischer Drehbuchautor, Filmregisseur und Filmkritiker. Bekannt wurde er durch das Drehbuch zu Martin Scorseses Taxi Driver (1976). Später setzte er seine Zusammenarbeit mit Scorsese fort und schrieb bzw. war Co-Autor von Wie ein wilder Stier (1980), Die letzte Versuchung Christi (1988) und Bringing Out the Dead (1999). Schrader hat auch intensiv als Regisseur gearbeitet: Zu seinen Filmen gehören Blue Collar (1978), Hardcore (1979), American Gigolo (1980), Mishima (1985), Light Sleeper (1992), Affliction (1997) und First Reformed (2017), wobei ihm letzterer seine erste Oscar-Nominierung einbrachte. Schraders Werke schildern häufig „Mann im Raum“-Geschichten, in denen isolierte, verzweifelte Männer mit einer existenziellen Krise konfrontiert sind.

Drei seiner jüngsten Filme bezeichnet Schrader als lose Trilogie: „First Reformed“ (2017), „The Card Counter“ (2021) und „Master Gardener“ (2022).
